Technical Tip: Battery Care

Written on the 28 April 2011

Battery Watering

Flooded batteries need water. More importantly, watering must be done at the right time and the right amount of water must be added.
Water should always be added after fully charging the battery. Prior to charging ensure that there is enough water to cover the plates. Batteries should be checked at least once a fortnight to ensure that the batteries have sufficient water.

Important things to remember:

• Do not let the plates get exposed to air, this will damage (corrode) the plates.
• Do not overfill the battery, this will result in a loss of acid resulting in a loss of capacity and cause a corrosive mess.
• Do not use water with a high mineral content, use distilled or deionised water only.

Battery Cleaning

Clean the batteries at least every month, this is done by mixing a solution of Bicarbonate of Soda and water in a suitable bucket, 60ml of Bicarbonate of Soda to 6 Litres of water, and then applying the solution to the batteries with a soft bristle brush. Allow the solution to set for at least three minutes. Rinse the entire area with low pressure clean water, and then use a cloth to wipe the tops of the batteries in order to remove any residue that could cause the self-discharge of the battery.

In addition to the batteries, special attention should be paid to metallic components adjacent to the batteries; clean these as described above.

Ensure that the battery terminals are lubricated with a Petroleum Jelly or Protective Spray.

• Never add acid to a battery
• Always ensure that the correct protective clothing and equipment is worn, protective safety goggles and rubber gloves.
